The concept of hydrogen-powered vehicles has been in existence for some time now, and most people have heard the term at one time or another. Designs for engines powered by water have been around for almost seven decades.
A man by the name of Charles Garrett created the first hydrogen-powered vehicle in the year 1935. However, the car only ran for a few minutes. It contained a modified carburetor with electrolysis plates in the carburetor’s throat. This first attempt at creating a hydrogen-powered car was a complete failure, and for many years after, research was stopped.
The theory behind hydrogen-powered cars has also been applied to hybrid vehicles, which use petrol and water to increase their mileage. In the year 1970, an individual by the name of Yull Brown created some technology that allowed vehicles to burn fuel efficiently and decrease dangerous emissions. In this design, a hydrogen/oxygen mixture, called Brown’s gas, is created through water electrolysis and fed to the vehicle’s engine through regular air-intake systems.
The company, Hydrogen Technology Applications, has recently created and patented one such design. Their design performs according to Brown’s gas theory, and they have recently trademarked this hydrogen/oxygen combination as Aquygen.
Hydrogen Technology says that they just stumbled upon Aquygen while developing an alternative to oxyacetylene used in welding. Dennis Klein, founder of the company, negotiated with leading US car manufacturers and the government to produce vehicles using this technology.
